ImprovizAncija Workshops

The workshops are intended for students of all levels of music education. The goal of the workshops is to expand musical knowledge and listening skills, as well as to improve technical and, above all, musical abilities through improvisation. The emphasis is on developing creativity and musical perception, particularly in recognizing specific musical patterns. The most important aspects are understanding rhythm and harmony, which serve as the foundation for creating simple melodic patterns at first, and later, more complex ones.

First, we learn a simple tune together and explore different ways to accompany it. Then, we dive into improvisation, playing with melodies and rhythms in a fun and interactive way. Through musical games and creative exercises, everyone gets a chance to express themselves and build confidence. The workshop wraps up with a short performance, where each participant shares their own musical idea.

The idea for this type of workshop arose in 2019 with the support of flute professor Matej Zupan from the Academy of Music in Ljubljana. The goal is to gradually integrate improvisation—not just playing, but also learning music without scores, relying solely on our ears. Since then, An has presented and led his workshops in many music schools across Slovenia with great success.

Teaching

"As the flute is my primary instrument, I strongly feel the desire to pass on the knowledge, music, and workflow that I have developed over the years."

After teaching in Oranienburg for two years, An is now teaching at the Freie Musikschule Tiergarten in Berlin since 2024, sharing his passion for all music. His teaching philosophy focuses on developing each student's individual musical voice while building strong technical foundations. He believes that learning the flute should be both structured and exploratory, combining traditional classical techniques with elements of improvisation, ear training, and creative expression. His lessons are tailored to each student's needs, whether they are beginners looking for a solid start, advanced players aiming to refine their skills, or professionals seeking new inspiration.

An also emphasizes body awareness and efficient playing techniques to prevent tension and injury, ensuring that students can play with ease and confidence. In his classes, music is more than just reading notes—it is about storytelling, emotional expression, and connecting with sound on a deeper level. Students are encouraged to experiment, improvise, and develop their unique artistic identity. New students of all ages and skill levels are welcome to join his classes at the Freie Musikschule Tiergarten. If you are passionate about the flute and eager to explore new dimensions of music, come and study with An in a dynamic, inspiring, and supportive environment.
